Mary joined our family in March 2006 at the age of eight. She was the matriarch of our pack. Her gentle demeanour and benevolent leadership had a calming effect on all. Retired from breeding, her maternal instincts extended beyond the whelping box to anyone she felt was in need.
Mary had an innate ability to recognize when someone needed emotional support. She would suddenly appear, sit as close as possible, and gently lean against them. Mary would stay as long as her presence was needed. She would trot off contently once she was satisfied her work was done. Mary was very intuitive, and her consoling behaviour required no audible or visual prompts. She often responded before her subject was aware of their declining frame of mind.
Mary was fiercely protective of her family. Although very obedient, Mary would only ignore my commands when she perceived danger. Mary would place herself between the threat and her ward. She would remain on guard, ready to intervene if need be. Mary always had my back, and I felt safe in her presence.
Mary passed away at 14 years of age. A day does not go by that we don’t miss our Mary.
